MSc Information Systems & Business Analysis has been designed to give you an expert understanding of how information systems support businesses and their operations. Through our specialist career pathway, the programme will give you in-depth knowledge and experience to prepare you for a range of careers in information systems consultancy, business analysis and management.

You will gain the technical, organisational and people skills needed to develop business systems and manage information systems projects in practice. A core workshop module gives you the opportunity to act as a consultant, creating a fully working information system within a realistic but supportive environment.

Professional Development Programme Module

Business skills for life: the essential Aston Professional Development Programme

The Aston Professional Development Programme (PDP) is an integral module that forms part of your MSc taught course from day one.This compulsory module runs throughout the academic year. We have designed it around knowledge through practice - to enhance your employability as you customise the PDP experience to suit your own learning goals and skills development needs.

We take a multidimensional, qualitative and individually tailored approach. Using reflective models, we integrate a competency-based framework into our existing academic programmes.  You will engage with different kinds of experiential learning, such as skills workshops, work-based experience, study abroad and develop your own unique skillset.  

This pathway between theory and the world of work brings together Aston’s faculty, careers practitioners and business and academic partnerships teams to help you step into your future careers as culturally aware, global professionals

You will be assessed through a mixture of examinations and coursework. The taught element of the programme is then complemented by a substantial piece of research leading to the completion of a dissertation.

Course director

Mr Paul Bocij 
BA (Hons), PGCert (SSRM), MPhil, LCGI, MBCS, CITP, FIfL
Paul is a Senior Teaching Fellow at Aston Business School, specialising in ICT, information systems and e-business. He is the author of numerous books related to technology and is one of the writers behind Business Information Systems, one of the UK’s most successful textbooks. He is a Chartered Information Technology Professional and a member of the British Computer Society. His industry experience spans more than 30 years.

This programme will prepare you for a range of specialist careers in consultancy, management and business analysis. It is also a suitable first step if you want to pursue a research or academic career. Recent graduate positions include:

  • Junior Consultant – Roland Berger (Nigeria)
  • Project Manager – Jaguar Land Rover.

The MSc in Information Systems and Business Analysis is designed to develop the key knowledge and competencies which are valued by international employers in related professions.  These include:

  • Interpersonal and communication skills
  • Ability to be effective in an international team-working environment.

In addition to the specialist modules, you will follow an integrated Learning, Skills and Career Development module which provides you with the tools and skills for linking your learning on the programme to your employability, career planning and continuing personal development.

  • A good UK honours degree (minimum upper second class)

  • Equivalent overseas degree recognised by Aston University.

As well as:

  • Two professional references – at least one must be from an academic referee

  • An official academic transcript of your university grades to date

  • A completed application form.

For International Students:

  • An official academic transcript, with an official English translation, of your university grades to date

  • Students whose native language is not English will also need to satisfy our English language requirements Pre-sessional English language programmes are available for good applicants whose English qualification falls just short of these requirements.
