Chartered Manager Degree Apprenticeship

A management course as unique as your business

The Chartered Manager is our most flexible degree apprenticeship course. It is suitable for a wide range of business areas, each module being infused with a leadership and effective management context. Your apprentices will gain a strong, well-rounded view of business functions and specialise in the area most important to your organisation. Their degree classification will be BSc Business and Leadership Management with full membership and Chartered Manager Status from the CMI.

The apprentice

Apprentices can range from new employees with no previous management experience to existing managers who have grown into their role, but lack a formal degree qualification. It is intended for professional managers in the private, public or third sector and all sizes of organisation who want to develop their management and leadership knowledge, transferable skills and behaviours. 

Roles can include anyone with significant management responsibilities. Responsibilities can include leading people, projects, operations and/or services to deliver long term results. The collaboration between work and study shapes your apprentice to behave ethically, lead others and deliver impact.

Academic content

Modules are taught from levels 4 to 6, each level increasing in difficulty. Your apprentices will have to deliver higher quality, more challenging, work to achieve the same grades as they gain knowledge, skills and experience throughout the courses. Topics are delivered across three stages.

The course is delivered through blended learning. Most teaching is delivered through a virtual learning environment. In this way teaching is delivered to students who are working on a client site, have irregular working patterns, and are dispersed across the country (and, potentially, in different time zones).


Apprentices are assessed throughout the course via exams, coursework and a portfolio.

The apprenticeship also includes an end point assessment, which consists of a review of their Final Project and Portfolio, followed by an interview with three people representing Aston University, the employer, and an independent assessor.

After the review, based both on the meeting and the portfolio, the assessors consider what grade of apprenticeship the student has reached – fail, pass, merit or distinction.

Entry points

The duration of the programme can range from 3 to 4.5 years, depending on the apprentice’s management experience. Presently, there are two entry points - March and September – but there is potential to fit this around your requirements.

Entry requirements

You can specify your own requirements in addition to the University’s. Aston University students typically achieve ABB at A-Level. Additional entry requirements from the government include:

  • Grade C in GCSE Mathematics and English or equivalent
  • Be a UK/EU/EAA resident for at least three years prior to starting the course
  • Have left full time education when the apprenticeship starts
  • Be at least 16 years old
