Meet Aston's Sports Scholars

Dessislava Lazarova

Did you know that Sport Aston awards Sports Scholarships? Up to six awards of up to £500 are made every year to talented sportspeople who study here at Aston University.

The scholarship scheme aims to help attract talented sports people, who are also academically bright to study here at Aston University, and to have them representing Aston University in a BUCS team or individual event. The scholarship is used for specialist coaching, gym membership, physio or equipment to enable them to continue to develop in their chosen sport whilst studying here at Aston.

This year Sport Aston has awarded six scholarships: 

Kiril Zahariev

Kiril Zahariev is a Tennis player from Bulgaria who is studying for a BSc in Business & Management. Kiril has represented the Bulgarian national team and was recently playing at Bulgaria’s most prestigious tennis club Levski-Sofia before starting here at Aston University. Kiril has played in (and won) many national and international tournaments as well as helping his club to become win the Bulgarian State Tennis Championship two years in succession. Kiril is looking forward to representing Aston University in the BUCS Championships and hoping for another fine summer season with Levski-Sofia. Whilst here during term time – he is also playing at Edgbaston priory Tennis Club – the top club in the West Midlands.

Dessislava Lazarova is a Tennis Player also from Bulgaria who is studying for a BSc in Management and Strategy. Dessi has represented the Bulgarian national team and was also playing at Levski-Sofia before starting here at Aston University. Dessi has played in and won many prestigious international tournaments across the globe and has also represented Nice Lawn tennis Club and been part of the prestigious Mouratoglu Tennis Academy. Dessi is representing the Univesity in the BUCS championships and hoping to play in some more major tournaments over the summer for Levski-Sofia. Whilst here during term time – she is also playing at Edgbaston Priory Tennis Club.

Both Kiril and Dessi were considering Loughborough and Aston to study. They chose Aston as they were so impressed with the University and its staff and the fact that the University offered the Sport Scholarship proved to them that we could help them continue their Tennis development whilst studying here at Aston!

Aleksander Vladimirov

Aleksander Vladimirov is a Basketball player studying Combined Honours Business and International Relations. Aleks is in his final year here at Aston and has developed and grown as a talented Basketball player since starting here at Aston University. In 2009 Aleks was part of the University West Midlands Basketball League champion team and has been a committed and star player for the University team over the years. Last year Aleks worked his way up to become a regular squad member for Birmingham A’s in the National League Division 2.

Henry Clarke

Henry Clarke is a Rugby player studying Combined Honours Business and Computer Science. Henry has been representing Staffordshire Under 20’s and Burton RFC as a number 8 and has become a star player for the Aston University team in his first season with them. Henry has also represented the University of Queensland in Australia when he enrolled onto their summer academy in 2010.

Sean O’Sullivan

Sean O’Sullivan is a Gaelic Football player studying for a BSc in Mathematics. Sean has spent time in Ireland representing C.L.C.G An Daingean in the County Kerry league. In fact Sean helped his team to win the County Kerry League and to become the West Kerry Champions. Sean has also represented Warwickshire at under 21’s level and hopes this year to break into the senior squad. Sean is representing the Aston University Gaels and hoping for a successful season this year.

Sophie Jayne Holding is a Ten Pin Bowler studying for a BSc in Psychology. Sophie Jayne has been representing Lancashire and captain of Blackpool and has achieved the award for the top female average scorer for the league 3 years in succession. She even finished in the top 3 for the past two years including male and females! Sophie Jayne is hoping to break into the England squad this year and the Scholarship award should help some way in this.
