One World Week 2011

One World Week will take place 31 January - 4 February

This year’s ‘One World Week’, organised by the Students’ Guild, is taking place from Monday 31 January through to Friday 4 February.

Aston Students’ Guild has organised a series of cultural events to celebrate the global mix and diverse population of students we have at Aston University. The aim is to stimulate personal development and inspire students to appreciate the different cultures in the one world in which we live.

Monday 31 January: Kick off Carnival and Food Festival

Venue: Aston Students’ Guild
Time: 12pm onwards

Everyone is welcome to join this carnival which will kick- start the One World Week festivities. Starting from the Guild Hall at midday, the carnival will go round the whole campus before ending up back at the Guild Hall where you can indulge in the tastes of world cuisine!

Tuesday 1 February: Aston Olympiad

Venue: Astro Turf and Gem Sports Hall
Time: Football 12:30 - 3:30pm 1-2 Astro Turf. Volleyball and bgadminton: 2 - 3:30pm

This Olympic themed event has competitions in football, volleyball and badminton. Form a team and sign up with a country name you are from or fancy (you can have all or no players from the country). It is absolutely free to join and who knows- you could be the one receiving the prize at the Guild on Friday!

Wednesday 2 February: World Music Night

Venue: B4 BAR Time: 9pm till late!

Along with the local chart music our Residents Dj will have you moving to Salsa, Bollywood, Arabian, Oriental, Bhangra, Chinese… you name it!

Thursday 3 February: Chinese New Year, International Pub Quiz- Karoake

Chinese New Year Festival: The Hong Kong, Chinese, Korean, Vietnamese Malaysian and Singaporean Society are working on this together to show the rest of us how they celebrate the start of their new year. With lion dancing, music, food tasters and much more, it is not to be missed!

International Pub Quiz and Karaoke: Questions will be asked about places from all over the world! Teams need to comprise of six people, and diversity will be the key to success! Followed by International Karoake, you’ll be singing songs in your own languages along with the usual Thursdays offerings! Make sure you come down to have a great night!

Friday 4 February: Cultural and Talent Show

Venue: Aston Students’ Guild
Time: 7pm onwards (£2 Entry)

The Guild Hall will be a stage to the many budding talents at Aston, plus cultural performances from our societies. There will also be a Cultural and Regional Fashion Show AND the awardceremony for the Aston Olympiad. Do not miss! There will be free food!
