Bright idea wins Lighting Design Award

Joe Roberts with his winning design

A gifted Aston graduate has won a highly regarded industry award, with an ingeniously designed lamp.

Engineering student, Joe Roberts, secured success in the British Lighting Design Awards (BLDA) after entering the competition to design an energy efficient light, as part of a university module.

His design of a desk top lamp as an aluminium arc with a moveable LED light source, impressed judges for both its sleek design and practicality in an office or home environment.

The BLDA competition attracts hundreds of highly skilled applicants each year, and is specifically aimed to encourage entrants to develop unique and innovative products.

The Industrial Product Design student said he was delighted to receive such a prestigious award.

“I wanted to create a concept for a desk top lamp that balanced the combination of both form and function, with the aluminium arc specifically designed to look stylish in the home or office while allow the light to turn and slide. I also used a low voltage LED light source which ensures the exposed surfaces remain perfectly safe, creating a highly usable, functional and aesthetically pleasing design,” he said.

Since winning the competition and graduating this year, Joe has been in further contact with a number of lighting design companies, with a view to developing his concept further.
