Students take part in leadership development weekend

The Careers and Employability Centre has sponsored a team of 10 Aston students to participate in a leadership development weekend at Swynnerton Camp, run by Birmingham University Officers’ Training Corps.

The leadership event, held on 18 - 20 March, was designed to develop teamwork and confidence amongst University Students through activities in a challenging environment. With Birmingham University Officer Training Corps cadets acting as guides and mentors, participants attempted physical challenges, watermanship tasks, climbing and abseiling, and intellectual led and leaderless command tasks.

Seventy seven undergraduates from six Universities within the West Midlands participated and the Aston team performed exceptionally well, beating all other groups to win the final days challenge and the trophy! This was especially commendable as they had finished last after the first days’ activities, proving they had learnt the lessons from the first day and put these into practice, especially on the Command task.

Student feedback on the weekend was very positive and comments included “a great experience”, “fun, fun, fun”, “very challenging but with a great sense of achievement”, and “the leadership skills learnt will help me with my future career”.

If you know any students who may be interested in attending future Leadership development events run by Birmingham University OTC, please contact Claire Girle c.l.girle@aston.ac.uk  or Richie Bell at Birmingham  University OTC (0121 449 3741).
