The Aston University Running Club: Three months down the line

Running club

For the past 10 weeks Aston University staff and students have been taking part an ‘Expanding Horizons’ initiative – the Aston University Running Club.

The group meets every Tuesday and Thursday lunchtime for a run and over 40 people have now taken part - with a core of about 20 who regularly attend every session.

Many in the group had either never run before or not run for a number of years. The progress has been astonishing! All members of the group are now able to run for 30 minutes continuously after a warm up and proceeded by a cool down and stretch.

Last weekend some members of the group entered the Cannon Hill 5k Park Run and did fantastically well. This was a real achievement and testament to the hard work they have put in over the last 10 weeks.

If you would like to take part and come out for a run led by trained run leaders please feel free to join us at 1pm at Gem Sports Centre every Tuesday and Thursday. We have two groups – a beginners group and an intermediate group.

We will be starting a new ‘beginners’ group after Easter – targeted again at those who have never run before or not run for a long time. The sessions start very gently alternating between walking and jogging very slowly and they build up gradually over the weeks until you are able to jog continuously without having to walk at all.   With the weather warming up and the days getting longer now could be a great time to start getting into the habit of regular exercise again in a fun, friendly, supportive and safe environment with colleagues form across the University.

We are also on the look-out for another person to become a trained ‘run leader’. You do not need to be super fit or have prior experience. There is a 1 day training course put on by ‘Run England’ that will teach you all you will need to know and Jen and I will be here to help and support you as well.

For any more information on joining the current group(s), on joining the new group after Easter (w/c 16th April) or on helping us by becoming a run leader please contact Jennifer Lines or myself.
