Staff attend the David Robinson charity summer ball

David Robinson chairty summer ball

Earlier this month, staff and students from across the University attended a charity summer ball at the Holiday Inn in Birmingham to raise money for David Robinson - a friend of Sport Aston's Simon Foster - who is suffering from multiple brain tumours and is raising money to fund specialist treatment in America.

A fantastic £1,400 was raised on the evening, with more money still being donated. Staff and guests enjoyed a three course meal, raffle, auction and a disco. David Robinson and his wife Almina were able to attend the ball and he gave an emotional speech to all staff at Aston University who have been working hard to fundraise on his behalf.

Here's what some of those who attended the event had to say:

“Thanks Simon for organising a great event. The entire evening had a relaxed and friendly vibe about it, with the opportunity to meet people from across campus and beyond. The highlight of the night was to be able to hear from Dave himself about his progress which was an inspiration in a number of ways, not least in the continued drive for fund raising." Emma Hurcombe, Library

“Great night, with great company for a fantastic cause!” Laura Mason, MPharm student

“I thoroughly enjoyed the evening and with David being well enough to attend capped it – he looked so well considering. Thank you to you for organising it, as ever, you did a grand job!  Can’t wait for the next event.” Karen Newman Brown, ISA

“The charity ball was a fantastic event. Simon and his team of helpers did an excellent job of organising the night and ensuring everyone had a great time, whilst raising money for an incredibly worthwhile cause. My friends are all asking when the next one will be!” Angela Morris, Schools and Colleges Liaison

The ball was the latest in a series of fund-raising initiatives that staff throughout the University have been involved in. £70,000 of the £100,000 target has now been raised for David in the last 14 months.

Organiser of this year's summer ball, Simon Foster, told Aspects: "It was quite a night with the party lasting well into the night. Everyone had gone to so much effort and looked amazing at this black tie themed event. There were some pretty impressive dance moves in action too! Thank you to everyone who attended the ball and who helped to make it such a special night – you are brilliant people and I hope you had fun!"

Photos taken at the ball should appear in next month’s edition of ‘Warwickshire Life’ magazine so keep your eyes peeled!
