University holds first staff benefits event

Staff benefits event

In November, Aston’s first Staff Benefits Exhibition was held in the Great Hall of the Students’ Guild.

The exhibition was extremely well attended by staff from all areas of the University and the event enabled those who attended to find out more about the range of benefits available to them. Benefits available to all staff include: a cycle to work scheme, childcare vouchers, sports facilities, AstBug, occupational health, LHS clinics, Chaplaincy, Aston Campus Wildlife Group, library facilities, the campus trade unions, conference and catering facilities, staff training and development, staff volunteering, plus staff & student diversity and well-being.

The event also saw the launch of Aston’s newest flexible benefit, Salary Sacrifice 4 Cars (SS4C), a green car scheme which allows staff to take full advantage of tax concessions for low emission lease cars.

Staff Benefits Exhibition

The Staff Benefits Exhibition was opened by the Vice-Chancellor who said: “Despite the difficult economic times that we are currently experiencing, we want Aston to be a great place to work for all of our staff and we hope that this exhibition reflects this. There are many advantages to working at a university such as access to the library, sports facilities, a first-class nursery and the various catering outlets that are available. These are enhanced by the benefits that have been introduced by the Human Resources Department. Employment at Aston brings with it admission to excellent pension schemes which, combined with the flexible benefit scheme, provides membership with the maximum tax advantages available. Our payroll allows staff to contribute to charities of their choice and have their salaries paid to any bank or building society in the UK.”

As I wandered around the stalls, those exhibiting were extremely impressed by the number of staff who had attended the event and also the enthusiasm many had shown. HR has since received much positive feedback from the event. Comments include:

“I am sure that a lot of Aston University staff felt the same way that I did today – that the University does greatly value its employees. In these worrying times of higher education cutbacks and recession news bulletins it is great to know that your employer is genuinely concerned in providing the kind of benefits exhibited today. The exhibition today certainly gave me ‘a lift’ and reminded me of some of the reasons why it is still great to work at Aston.”

“The exhibition was a great success, it was certainly well attended and we had a lot of people talking to us. Ideal opportunity to raise awareness of benefits that many people weren’t aware of.”
