Can Aston University match the mileage?

Starting in February, a group of students will travel 29,995 miles crossing 36 countries and 10 time zones in a classic London Black cab

As you will know, this year is Aston's year of ‘Crossing Boundaries' – full details of which will be revealed very soon! As part of this campaign a group of Aston students will be attempting a Guinness World record for the longest taxi journey. Starting in February, the students will travel 29,995 miles, crossing 36 countries and 10 time zones, in a classic London Black cab.

Today sees the launch of a staff ‘Match the Mileage’ campaign. We want Aston staff and students to see if we can collectively 'keep up' with the students' cab journey by running, walking, cycling and swimming.

To take part, you will need to keep a log of the number of steps you walk, miles you run or cycle, or lengths you swim. Then you'll just need to email them to Simon Foster (Sport Aston) every two weeks. Simon will then keep a running totoal of the number of miles university staff and students have achieved and track this against the students' cab journey. You will shortly be able to track this progress on a world map in the Upper Foyer of the Main Building.

To help you with motivation and to give you a goal to work towards, Simon is asking of you to make a personal pledge - this will be your pledge to run, walk, cycle or swim a set distance every week from now until October when the taxi journey ends. You will have your own log in from the 'Match the Mileage' website where you will be able to update your own miles and check them against your pledged target. You will also receive motivational emails, tips and advice throughout the year. Simon can offer you advice on a realistic pledge if you would like some help!

Each month prizes will be awarded to Aston's Match the Mileage 'heroes’ – those who have made a real effort. Everyone who takes part will also receive a free pedometer to help you on your way when you register.

The Sport Aston gym is there to help you – you will be able to record the miles you have run or cycled at the gym and as always, our friendly and fully qualified gym staff are always on hand to offer help and advice. Personal training, andpPersonal programmes are also available. You can have your gym membership taken directly out of your payroll and receive a discounted price on your membership: Find out more about joining the Sport Aston Gym.

And don’t forget that the well being group lunchtime walks will be starting again soon – giving you lots of opportunities to take part in interesting walks with staff from across the University.

A New Year brings us all a new opportunity and often the motivation to improve our health and well being. So make a start today by registering for the ‘Match the Mileage’ campaign and take that first step.

For more information and/or to register please contact Simon Foster at s.j.foster1@aston.ac.uk or ext 4630.
