Sport Aston staff swim English Channel for charity

Last Friday (4 December) five members of staff from Sport Aston swam the distance of the English channel (22 miles) between them in aid of Aspire – the spinal cord injury charity.

This worked out to be 4.5 miles (over 300 lengths!) each. Simon Foster, Darren Hale, Michele Robins, Jonathan Williams and Samantha Berry completed the swim in 11 hours and 15 minutes – which was a terrific team effort! Over £300 was raised for Aspire from our Just Giving page and from collections made at the centre (any donation – no matter how small - still welcome).

The swim was exhausting for everyone involved – even for our part human/part fish leisure assistants Sam and Jonathan! We would like to thank everyone who sponsored and supported us for the swim.

The swim also highlighted the many benefits associated with regular swimming which include:

  • Builds endurance

  • Build muscle strength

  • Builds cardio-vascular fitness

  • Helps maintain healthy weight

  • Gives you a low impact total body work out

  • Relaxing and peaceful

  • Improves co-ordination

  • Improves flexibility

  • Helps maintain healthy lungs

Swimming just 2 - 3 times a week can really start to make a difference to your health and fitness. You will not only start to feel fitter and healthier physically but also mentally and may also benefit from increased concentration levels and a more relaxed positive state of mind.

For me personally, I find that when you swim you cannot be interrupted by phones ringing and emails flashing up. It's a fantastic time to consider work issues and problems in my head without interruption. There is also something very tranquil about swimming at Woodcock Swimming pool – with all its beauty and history that really puts me in a better mood for the day.

Staff can pay per swim at just £1.65 per swim or can purchase a 12 for 10 card (giving you 12 swims for the price of 10).

Regular swimmers (those swimming 2 or more times per week) can save money by purchasing a swim membership for 3 or 12 months. A 3 month swim membership is only £37 and a 12 month swim membership is just £110. You can now have your swim membership taken directly out of your payroll at £9.16 per month.
