You may not recognise her by sight but you will have heard her voice a hundred times! Switchboard Operator Christine Siviter has worked at Aston for 22 years and will be picking up the phone for the last time on 31 March when she retires from the University.
Christine started working at the University in 1988 when she decided that she wanted to work more hours and gain experience of working with a bigger switchboard. Although her role may not have changed, the technology that Christine uses has changed dramatically. The switchboard moved from an automatic exchange system four years ago to the direct dial system we have today. Now the Switchboard team (made up of Christine, Marianne Lynne, Kay Blackford and Lynn Daly) deal with over 2,000 calls and queries on a daily basis!
Christine has enjoyed her time working at the University. ‘I love that I work as part of such a great team of people’ she remarked. ‘The fact that I’m able to constantly offer advice in my role and knowing that I’ve really helped someone is a great feeling.’
Christine will be spending her retirement visiting her daughter who lives in Australia, seeing friends, and generally taking life at a slower pace. Bliss!
If you’d like to say farewell to Christine there will be a lunchtime bash from 12:30pm on Wednesday 31 March in MB416. All welcome.
Remember that if you’re struggling to find the extension number for a colleague you can just dial ‘0’ and the switchboard team will put you straight through!
