Aston staff cricket team share victory of the Ashes with their own triumph!

Aston University Staff cricket  team finished the season in fine style, with a narrow victory, and some excellent hospitality from our hosts Deloittes, at Moseley Cricket Club last week.

Electing to bat, Aston got off to a good start with a useful first wicket partnership between the stylish Nikunj Patel  (34) and powerful Chris ‘Chunky’ Betts (19). Unfortunately Aston’s middle order then collapsed badly against some hostile Deloittes bowling, aided by some extraordinary LBW decisions by our own umpire, Richard ‘Trigger’ Cooke. Stewart Comfort (22 not out) steadied the University innings and some impressive hitting from Cooke, redeeming himself with 23, and Jonathan Small (17 not out) helped the visitors to a competitive total of 134-6 from 20 overs.

A strong Deloittes team were rocked by an excellent opening bowling spell from skipper Sultan Hussain (4-21). Although the home side kept up with the run rate throughout, some good fielding, most notably from our ‘overseas players’ Joel Talcott and Nick Lee kept them in check, and they were eventually all out 7 runs short of the target.
