Last week on Tuesday 8 and Wednesday 9 June, Sport Aston hosted the fourth annual ‘Aston Olympians’ event.
240 children from eight local primary schools took part in a series of sporting challenges helped by University staff and student volunteers. This year we also had the support of pupils from Aston Manor School who are studying for their Sports Leaders awards.
The children, aged 9-10 years, came from the Primary Schools of Prince Albert, Mansfield Green, Aston Tower, Sacred Heart, Yew Tree, Deykin Avenue, Manor Park and Birchfield Community.
Activities included bench ball, water-polo, team skills, a gym challenge and football and Prof Helen Higson was on hand to present the schools with their certificates at the end of each day. Certificates were also presented to the Aston Manor School pupils for their help with the running of the activities.
Since the event we have heard that the children could not stop talking about the event all the way home… and the next day… and are still talking about it now!
The Aston Olympians event is only made possible thanks to a partnership between the Titan Partnership, Sport & Recreation and Aston Pride. Other departments played important roles in making the event possible and thanks go to University Catering & Conferences Services for finding sponsors for the water and to Schools & Colleges Liaison for the volunteers’ packed lunches.
The teachers were very impressed by our staff and students and we have already received lots of great feedback. Over 100 volunteers helped out over the two days and we would like to say a huge thank you to everyone who took part in making this event so much fun. For those who couldn’t join us this time, we look forward to seeing you at next year’s event!
