Varsity 2017: Aston vs BCU

Varsity

It is that time of year again when our Aston teams face off against BCU for the crown of Varsity champions. Expectations were for a highly contested week, as both Aston and BCU are coming off positive BUCS seasons and were aiming for victory.

Unlike previous years, this years Varsity began on a Sunday, with a rowing competition. The day was not without controversy however, with Aston accusing BCU off cheating in two out of the three races. In one fo the races Aston claimed BCU cut up into Aston's lane, resulting in Aston slowing down to avoid contact which meant BCU were able to claim victory. Aston also claimed that BCU has counted an en-legible race, despite BCU stating that the result of the race would not be counted. With Aston winning the first race comfortably the score at the end of day one ended 2-1 to BCU.

Monday started off with the Women's Basketball in action here at the Woodcock Sports Centre. The match was highly contested with both teams trading points until the last quarter. Aston showed great heart and determination to clinch the 33-32 victory with only seconds remaining. The Men's Basketball followed, with Aston being huge favorites in this match up. The team did not disappointing, going up by over 20 points before the end of the first half. Aston continued their dominance in the third and fourth quarter, and claimed a 71-41 victory against the local rivals.

Tuesday was set up to be another exciting day of fixtures, with all three netball teams in action. The first team started the day by claiming victory in what could go down as the most exciting match of varsity this year. With only 5 seconds to go, Aston were able to take the ball into the BCU half, and with the last play of the match they were able to score, which meant Aston beat BCU 34-31. Both the second and third team put in promising performances on on Tuesday but were unable to claim victory losing 22-14 and 30-14 respectively.

There was a long list of fixture's for Wednesday, with over twelve games being played throughout the day. The highlights from Wednesday were the Football 1st teams convincing 3-1 victory, the Tennis's teams   8-2 victory, the Men's Badminton's 8-0 victory and Extreme Sports 4-0 victory. The Football firsts victory marks the end for what has been a fantastic season for the team, who have played well all season and were crowned undefeated BUCS 4A league champions.

Both the Men's and Women's Volleyball teams were in action on Thursday. The Men's team started off the day with a convincing 3-1 victory, having come into the match strong favorites. There was also a mixed Volleyball game shortly after, which Aston ended up losing 3-1. There were less competitive fixtures on Thursday with non competitive Fifa, Mario Kart, Tekken and Dance Mat tournament's taking place.

Aston had already been crowned Varsity 2017 champions coming into Friday which took the pressure off of the Men's rugby team who were in action in the evening. The team were favourities coming into the match having claimed the Midlands 3A championship this year and bosting one of the strongest rugby teams Aston has ever had. Aston were met with an extremely spirited BCU team who fought for every ball and put in a fantastic display. Aston were able to seal a 13-0 victory, and finish varsity 2017 off in style.

Thank you to all of the teams who took part in this years varsity, and more importantly a big thank you to all of the supporters who came to support both Aston and BCU! #TeamAston
