Aston BUCS News - 9th November 2016

BUCS

This week saw the majority of Aston teams competing in the cup, with only one league game being played. The early rounds of the cup are notoriously hard to get out of so it was encouraging to see strong performances all round, with the majority of teams progressing into the next round.

In the late start of the day womens Basketball 1st comfortably defeating a strong University of Nottingham side 59-29. A strong start was key to their victory as they finished the first quarter 16-3 up, and maintained their lead from then on. Mens football also won both their games as the 1st and 3rd team were both in action. The 1st team defeating a powerful Nottingham Trent side 7-2, who they narrowly defeating in the league a few weeks prior. The 3rd team were in action against Birmingham City who they easily defeating 5-0. Tensions will be high in the next round as the 3rd team have been drawn against the 2nd team, it will be interesting to see who comes how victorious next week.

In other fixtures this week, Netball seconds went up against Nottingham Trent. Nottingham Trent are well known for their strong Netball teams so it took an impressive performance for Aston to defeat them 39-9. A performance Aston will hope to build on as they enter the next round of the cup. The womens tennis firsts played against Nottingham Trent seconds this week down at Billesley Tennis Centre. Despite an encouraging performance by the team Nottingham were too strong as they won 8-4.

In the one league fixture this week womens Volleyball traveled to Leicester in the Midlands 2A Division, to face De Montford 1st. Both teams put in positive performances with De Montfort narrowly coming out on top winning 3-2. Despite the loss Aston are currently still second in the league and will be looking for promotion this year.

Overall, a positive week for our Aston teams winning the majority of our cup games and progressing through to the next round. The season really seems to be picking up and the coming few weeks are set up to be exciting ones!
