Aston BUCS News - 30th November 2016

BUCS

After last week’s cup round of fixtures each team returns to their respective leagues this week, looking for vital wins as we move closer to Christmas break in fixtures. This week’s stand out performances came in a local derby as both the Mens & Womens Volleyball teams travelled to the University of Wolverhampton. The Womens team continued their league dominance with a 3-0 victory, while the Mens team showed why they are fighting for the league title with a 3-1 victory. Both teams are on fantastic runs in their respective leagues with the Mens currently second with a game in hand on the leaders Warwick. The Womens team are also performing well as they find themselves top of their league, above teams such as Loughborough & Leicester firsts.

In a surprising win for Aston, the Mens Tennis firsts picked up their first victory of the season with a 7-4 victory over the University of Coventry. This could be a huge victory for the team as it now puts them level on points with the team above them with a game in hand. As Aston currently sit bottom of the table this victory will hopefully give the team some confidence moving into next week’s game, against Worcester who sit above them in the table. In the afternoon football kickoff this week the Mens 1st ended the University of Birmingham’s undefeated record with a 2-1 victory at the Recreation Ground. This victory maintains Aston’s lead at the top of the Midlands 4A division, creating a three-point gap between themselves and the University of Birmingham.

In the days late kick-off, Aston Mens Basketball 1st faced off against Staffordshire University 2nd here at the Woodcock Sports Centre. It has been a difficult season so far for the team who have put in encouraging performances in each of their matches but until this match have been unsuccessful when trying to find a win. This being their first win of the season will hopefully spur on the team to finish the season strong.

In other fixtures this week Netball seconds comfortably defeated the University of Derby 38-20, while Mens Squash came back from their defeat last week to overcome Oxford Brookes 2-1. Overall an extremely promising set of results this week for Aston with several teams picking up their first victories of the season. #TeamAston
