Aston Bears Water Polo Team 14-15

The Aston Bears Water Polo team have had a very successful year and topped it off with 2nd place at the UPolo National Finals on the 9th May.

They qualified for the finals through their outstanding league performance winning 6 games, drawing 1 and losing 1.

By this point Aston Bears already had the 3rd and 4th top goal scorers nationally in Gemma Deery and Michelle Byrne respectively.

Aston Bears League Results:
Aston Ladies 20 1 University of Birmingham 2nds
Aston Ladies 13 4 University of Birmingham 2nds
Aston Ladies 14 3 Leicester
Aston Ladies 11 5 Leicester
Aston Ladies 5 5 Oxford
Aston Ladies 7 8 Oxford

Once the league was over they could turn their attention to the National Finals. The finals consisted of the top performing league 2 teams from each region. Each team played the others once with the overall winner claiming the Shield.

With up to 3 matches taking place at the same time the atmosphere was electric and the Aston Bears used the noise and excitement to their advantage. The first match against Exeter was a comfortable one for the ladies and they went into half way with a 4-0 lead. With a comfortable lead and knowing they had another 2 games to play in the same day the approach for the 2nd half was controlled perfectly and they won the match 9-3.

The second match against Southampton was a much tougher test and the team were feeling the pressure. Southampton's goalie was in top form making it difficult for Aston to break through. Aston kept pressing through and started to make progress in the 2nd half, eventually winning 9-6.

Their final match was against Leeds who had won every one of their league games convincingly. Aston knew they were up against it but with neither side having lost a match during the tournament it was all to play for.

Aston took the early lead in what was going to be a very physical match and at half time there was only one goal in it. Some referee decisions went against Aston in the early stages of the 2nd half and the physicality of the match started to show with Leeds pulling away to a 3-9 victory with Aston claiming 2nd place.

Overall the team have had an impressive season in both the league and the UPolo Finals with every team member performing throughout the year. Everyone involved deserves a massive congratulations for the work they have put in over the year. The team voted Michele Byrne as the Most Valuable Player of the UPolo tournament.
