The annual Aston University Enterprise Competition was held on Thursday 3 March. The competition culminated in a dragon’s den style final in which both the runner-up and overall prizes were awarded to Aston Business School students. The winner, final year Business and Management student, Olivia Keogh impressed the judges with her Pop Up Card Company and was awarded the first prize of £500 from EY, and a market research package from Marketest.
Olivia’s business produces unique, hand crafted pop-up cards that amaze and delight recipients with their novelty, style and elegance. The Pop Up Card Company’s cards are collectible treasures and brilliant keepsake gifts that spring to life with each memorable opening. The company has been trading since June 2015, with impressive online sales and has already secured contracts with a number of specialist retailers.
Close runner up were Aston Business School postgraduate students Vincenzo Scognamiglio and Adedeji Layade with their management consultancy We Grow. The company provides marketing consultancy services combining online and offline marketing strategies for business growth. We Grow works with local SMEs and matches consultancy projects to students, providing them with industry experience. They received a £250 prize from Santander plus a package of support.
The judging panel was made up of industry experts including Kiran Nath, Senior Consultant at EY, Paula Whitehouse, Director of the Aston Centre for Growth and Brom Karampreet, University Relationship Branch Manager for Santander.
Paula Whitehouse commented:
“The standard in this year’s final was particularly high. Aston University students are really enterprising and this event is a great showcase for their ideas. Choosing a winner and runner up was a difficult decision. All the finalists pitched really well this evening. However Olivia’s proposal stood out as an innovative product with huge growth potential.”
