On Thursday 15th October, almost 40 students took advantage of a fantastic opportunity to attend a Speed Networking event with top employer Her Majesty’s Revenue & Customs (HMRC).
HMRC was placed 60 and 42 out of 300 in the Guardian UK 300 top graduate employers in 2012 to 2013 and 2013 to 2014 respectively, and has been voted by students in the Target Jobs awards 2013 to 2014 as the best graduate recruiter in the banking, insurance and financial services sector.
Organised by Aston Business School, the event gave undergraduate and postgraduate students the opportunity to find out more about internship and graduate scheme vacancies, by networking with graduates already employed by HMRC at different stages of the Tax Specialist Programme (TSP).
With 56,000 employees, around £500 billion revenue, and around 33 million customers, HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) is a major employer and the Tax Specialist Programme offers a route to working as a generalist tax professional or specialist in technical or investigative work.
The programme is structured to identify and develop potential, ensuring participants are ready to take up a senior tax position on completion of the programme, which takes around 4 years.
Students attending were studying a variety of degrees with Aston Business School, including Accounting for Management and Finance, as well as MSc programmes in International Business, Human Resource Management and Business and Investment Analysis. The speed networking format of the evening meant each student was able to speak to HMRC staff and discuss their individual circumstances on a one to one basis.
The students left with a greater insight into each stage of the programme so that they are able to make an informed decision about applying to the programme.
Aston Business School runs a series of these events, the next of which is with Deutsche Bank on Thursday 19th November. Register here.
