11 February 2015

A creative Aston graduate has launched a Nigerian fashion design business and aims to take her independent brand to the international stage.

Aston law and business management graduate, Laura Ahman, is the creative designer for the brand, of the same name. Her Nigerian fashion house, which she launched in February 2014 specialises in footwear inspired by her cultural roots.

The business recently featured in the Guardian when Laura was named their Young Designer of the Week.

The 23 year old is currently completing her NYSC, an initiative set by the Nigerian government to involve the country’s graduates in the development of the country. Laura, originally from Nigeria is using local resources to provide high quality products at more affordable prices.

Over the past five years, the Nigerian fashion industry has grown tremendously resulting in stronger Nigerian brands and more Nigerians willing to support local designers.

Laura, creative designer for Laura Ahman, said: “There is nothing more exciting than seeing your designs come to life, that is the best part of my job and it gives me great joy.”

She continues: “As a young adult I am proud of where I am now and my achievements so far. I’ve always had the enterprising zest and energy. I have always felt like it would be a disservice to myself if I don’t contribute to the development of our society by sharing my ideas and skills in any way possible. I want to serve as an inspiration to the younger generation.”

The brand hopes to expand even further in the future with accessories and handbags.
