Samuel Wilson co-founded Breadnut Clothing with friend Daniel Thomas in August 2013 with the intention of creating bright, stylish garments for boys aged between 5 -12. They sell a variety of shirts, jumpers and snapback caps through their website.
The company has since received favourable reviews on children’s fashion blogs and been chosen as the editor’s pick of new clothing brands in a forthcoming issue of childrenswear magazine, CWB.
International Business and Modern Languages (IBML) student Sam said: “Breadnut started out after Dan and I had a conversation about how boring our clothes were when we were young. Then we had a look at what was currently available for children and we didn’t think much had changed. Children have their own personalities and want to dress fashionably but it’s very hard for them to do so at present.
“We thought there was a gap in the market and began designing clothes for kids – not just a smaller version of an adult range, but specifically designed for them. They had to be different and colourful and not look or feel cheap.”
The team is currently designing clothing ranges for specific seasons and developing relationships with several retailers. They are also considering the possibility of producing a line of clothes for girls in the future.
Sam, who was President of Aston Entrepreneurs in his second year, is not the only IBML student to achieve business success. Graduate Nick Holzherr starred in TV show The Apprentice and has gone on to develop the lauded smartphone food app, Whisk.
“It is great having successful entrepreneurs like Nick to look up to,” explained Sam. “It makes you realise it is possible to do well. I hope to be able to follow in his footsteps.”
