20 September 2012 Developing strong links between industry and academia was the key theme for a major Conference hosted at Aston Business School (ABS).
Rolls Royce Plc. and Ford Motor Company were among the global leaders represented at the prestigious International Conference on Manufacturing Research (ICMR), which has been held annually in the UK since the late 1970s.
The conference, renowned for successfully bringing together a broad community of researchers, academics and industrialists, featured 150 papers and presentations at ABS and was chaired by Prof. Tim Baines and Dr. Ben Clegg from Aston Business School and Prof. David Harrison from Glasgow Caledonian University.
This year’s event, which began with a welcome from Aston University’s Vice Chancellor, Professor Dame Julia King, had a strong emphasis on industrial relevance, with an aim to promote manufacturing engineering education, training and research. The key theme of the three day conference was to examine, develop and manage technologies and operations capable of sustaining a successful manufacturing business base of the future for the UK and beyond.

Dr Clegg said “it was fantastic to see new and emerging ideas being applied to industrial problems by so many enthusiastic people … it reminds us that the UK is still capable of doing world class manufacturing”.
