Budding young engineers from schools across the West Midlands were invited to Aston University, to take up the task of researching, designing and building solutions to ‘real-life’ engineering problems.
The pupils, aged 12 to 13, had the chance to gain practical hands on science experience and put their problem solving skills to the test, as part of the IET Faraday engineering challenge day. The event was designed to raise aspirations and encourage more young people into studying and consider careers in science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM).
Aston University’s Schools and Colleges Liaison team and School of Engineering and Applied Science, hosted six teams of six 12 to 13-year-olds from Ellesmere College, Shropshire ; St Benedicts RC High School, Warwickshire; Perry Beeches School, Birmingham ; Bishop Challoner Catholic College, Birmingham; Studley High School, Warwickshire and South Wolverhampton and Bilston Academy, Wolverhampton
The top three teams involved in the challenge were Studley High School (1st place); St Benedict’s RC High School and Perry Beeches School (joint 2nd)
Gareth James Head of Education at the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET), which organised the event, said; “The Faraday programme is all about inspiring and attracting tomorrow’s engineers. Engineering is often an invisible industry amongst young people. They also have preconceived negative ideas about what engineers look like and the jobs they do.Through these challenge days and the entire Faraday programme we aim to encourage more young people to study STEM subjects and consider engineering as an exciting and rewarding career path.”
Amandip Bisel, Aimhigher Officer at Aston University, said; “The event was absolutely fantastic in raising the aspirations of the young learners involved. This is the first time that this UK wide challenge has been run in conjunction with universities. We have enjoyed great feedback from the schools involved and we hope that the success of the event will forge a relationship for the future that will see many more similar Challenges being hosted at Aston University.”
