Aston University has set a tuition fee of £9,000 a year for all UK/EU undergraduates starting degree courses from September 2012.
Aston is known for its outstanding record for graduate employment success and for exploitable, internationally recognised research in areas including new drug design, sustainable energy, business and strategy, and forensic linguistics.
The £9,000 fee will allow the Institution to continue developing its placement years, whilst ensuring that every Aston undergraduate also has the opportunity to develop global citizenship skills. This includes an innovative entrepreneurship programme and opportunity to learn a modern foreign language.
As part of its agreement with OFFA (Office for Fair Access), Aston is making a strong commitment to social mobility for UK/EU students planning to join the University in 2012/13. Aston has developed financial packages to support students from households with incomes of less than £42,000. The biggest discounts are available to students whose household income is less than £14,000.
These incentives include fee discounts and a range of Scholarships which will provide additional targeted support for an estimated 45% of new Aston students in 2012. They have been created to ensure there is no financial disincentive stopping young people who wish to study at Aston from being able to do so.
Aston’s highly regarded sandwich placement year will also not be subject to a £9,000 tuition fee. The placement year will be set at £1,000 from September 2012. Around 70% of eligible Aston students study for degrees with an integrated placement year or year abroad. Setting the placement year fee at a low level will allow as many students as possible to gain valuable work experience and improve their skills and job prospects. Many Aston students will be eligible for fee waivers for this highly valuable, life changing experience whilst the majority are also paid a salary for the year.
Professor Julia King, Aston’s Vice Chancellor said: ‘With 2,000 graduates each year, Aston is small by comparison to many other universities. It is also highly successful in having a far stronger track record for both graduate employment and social mobility than many other larger and higher profile institutions. Aston is a university that transforms the lives of many of our students and propels them into exciting careers. We don’t talk about social mobility, or treat it as an add on – it is absolutely central to the way we work at Aston.’
Professor King added: ‘We are very conscious that we are now educating the generation that will have to deliver, over their professional lives, such critical challenges as carbon emissions reduction and global economic growth, in an increasingly international work environment. Setting our fees at £9,000 will allow us to continue to develop our placement years, whilst ensuring that every Aston undergraduate also has the opportunity to develop global citizenship skills. This includes an innovative entrepreneurship programme and opportunity to learn a modern foreign language, to further enhance their education and employability.’
Aston graduates are consistently among the most employable in the UK. An Independent Survey of the ‘Top 100 Employers’ in the UK rates Aston as one of the top twenty universities they turn to for graduate talent. The Sunday Times University Guide ranks Aston 10th out of all UK Universities for graduate level employment success over the last three years - higher than 14 of the 20 Russell Group universities.
