Aston University has further improved its learning facilities with the expansion and re-development of its Basil Spence designed University Library.

The remodelled Library, with its iconic glass façade and bright interior, was officially opened on Tuesday 2nd November by the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Julia King.

Professor King said, “The experience our students have at Aston is of paramount importance to us.  The new library facilities turn this handsome building from a fortress for books to a bright space for sharing knowledge, reflecting the learning styles of today’s students. Following on from the new Aston Student Village residences, which opened in September, the library project is another important milestone in the development of our campus, and a clear demonstration of our commitment to our students.”

The ground floor of the Library is now a dedicated social study space, ideal for group work. The seating caters for groups of different sizes and includes flexible meeting ‘pods’, and a new café area has been added, offering students a  great environment in which to work together comfortably and productively on projects.

In line with the University’s sustainability policy, and its commitment to 10:10 (to reduce emissions by 10% in 2010), the development delivers a significant improvement in environmental performance. The North-facing glass façade allows in more natural light and the thermal performance has been improved through cavity wall insulation and an upgrade of materials used in the building. The Library is now linked to Aston’s highly efficient Combined Heat and Power Plant.

Aston University is currently redeveloping its Woodcock Sports Centre, which includes a Grade II listed Edwardian swimming pool, to transform it into a modern, vibrant sports facility whilst retaining its unique character and original features. The project is due to be completed in Autumn 2011.
