Aston graduate recruits from Jaguar Land Rover helped to design and build an electric powered, environmentally efficient car to compete in this year’s Greenpower competition.
The event, held at Goodwood, West Sussex on April 26, aimed to inspire the next generation of young engineers, with specific focus on sustainable motoring. Each team was given the same electric motor and battery set up, with competitors seeing who could travel the furthest distance in four hours. The team managed an impressive 72 miles, placing the team in a top 25 finish.
A record 400 teams competed last year, when Greenpower launched its Corporate Challenge. This allowed companies, including Jaguar Land Rover to pit their wits against the top 15 school teams, by building and racing a car to the same regulations.
Aston MBA alumnus Mark Ellis, who is a senior engineer at Jaguar Land Rover oversaw the Jaguar Land Rover graduate team, which is being sponsored by Aston University’s School of Engineering & Applied Science.
Two recent Aston graduates, Adam Henderson and Dominic Brown, added their considerable skills to the team. Adam is heading up all Marketing and PR for the event, while Dominic, who graduated with a Masters in Product Design, previously project managed Aston’s Formula student team, last year.
Rebecca Austin, Jaguar Land Rover’s Graduate Recruitment Manager said that the Greenpower project was an ideal opportunity to allow new recruits to investigate new environmentally linked motoring technologies. “This year’s intake of graduates has had a positive impact on our business, particularly when, in the current climate, the motor industry faces tough challenges,” said Ms Austin.
“The initiative and professionalism of graduates from universities such as Aston is a key factor in ensuring Jaguar Land Rover remains at the forefront of automotive engineering.”
Jaguar Land Rover recruited just over 140 graduates last year, comprising of 12 from Aston University.
The six month Green Power project has involved all aspects of project management from designing and building the actual car from reused waste material through to financing and purchasing, IT support, marketing and PR.
