Disasters in China and Burma

Aston University would like to express our deepest sympathy to those affected by the earthquake that hit Sichuan province, People's Republic of China on May 12th 2008 and by Cyclone Nargis that hit Myanmar (Burma) on May 3rd 2008.

Aston University has both Chinese and Burmese staff and students on campus, some of whom have links with the areas most affected by the cyclone and earthquake. We appreciate how distressing it must be being far from home at this time. Our thoughts are with these students and members of staff in particular.

Aston staff and student Counselling Services (G16/18) , and the University’s Multi-Faith Chaplaincy Services (Lawrence Tower) are available to assist anyone affected by these disasters. We would encourage you to make use of these support services. Students can also find support from the Student Advice Centre in the Guild or, if you live on campus, from your Residence Tutor.

A special service of remembrance is being organised by the Chaplaincy Service. For details please call ext 4276.

Aston staff and students can make charitable donations directly to various international relief agencies such as OXFAM www.oxfam.org.uk, The British Red Cross www.redcross.org.uk, UNICEF www.unicef.org or DEC – The Disasters Emergency Committee www.dec.org.
