In order to succeed in business in today's global economy, the procurement of a language is, I would argue, the most important skill one can have. I chose to study IBML German to gain a comprehensive understanding of the functions and processes for managing organisations as well as changes in the international business environment.

The integrated approach to learning of the two entities (Business & German) was the main drawing factor for me to Aston. The module International Business Environment (Germany) that is studied each year and enhances in breadth, is a real asset to this specialized course. Along with the German language module, which is orientated specifically for business students studying a foreign language, I felt well equipped for the challenges and cultural differences that lay ahead of me in my placement year.

With unprecedented support from the Aston University Placements Team, I was successful in obtaining a one year placement with E.ON IT GmbH working in Corporate Applications: Group wide Planning & Solutions. This unit resembles the back bone of the company in providing IT support to all E.ON employees and customers world-wide. Whilst on the placement year, the unrivalled support from Aston continues with each student being assigned an Aston Supervisor who will assist you with any problems you face as well as acting as a ‘consultant’ on your Year Abroad Essay to ensure you achieve the best grade possible for the integral year abroad.

The compulsory placement year is a real unique selling point for our leading institution and this sentiment is echoed in the recent Sunday Times University Guide where Aston is above Oxbridge in graduate employability. I have personally experienced this first rate reception from employers when applying for Summer Internships that will start in 2012. Having applied for opportunities in the area of consultancy with the Big Four Firms: Price Waterhouse Coopers, KPMG, Deloitte and Ernst & Young, they have been somewhat impressed not only by me pursuing a placement, but also with it being in a foreign country and that I am immersing myself in a completely different culture and business mentality.

The compactness of the Aston campus in the centre of the vibrant city of Birmingham is a real differentiating factor to this institution. It combines the campus community-living life with the string of bars, restaurants, and employment opportunities that you would expect from living in a city. With different parts of the city offering a different element of the multicultural community of Birmingham, the city is bound to accommodate all tastes as well as offer you the option to immerse yourself in the previously unknown…the possibilities are ENDLESS!

On a final note, the philosophy of the IBML programme is to enable students to gain an understanding of the problems and challenges of management through rigorous academic learning as well as being placed in real business situations during the year abroad. Coupled with the development of your language proficiency in the target language to a very high level and underpinned with the supportive and dedicated culture instilled within the staff at Aston, I personally could not recommend this course more highly to prospective students.
