BSc Business and Politics, Graduate 2012

I chose Aston University specifically for the Placement Year. However, the day I arrived on campus I realised that there is much more to the University. Its small size means that you’re never far from friends, whilst evoking a sense of community. Its location in the centre of Birmingham is also advantageous, as it means you have all the pubs, clubs and shops a student could ever want, right on your door step.

I picked to study Business and International Relations because of the scope of study involved. For example, especially within the IR school, you are encouraged to focus on subjects that interest you most, and are thus given considerable freedom when it comes to assessments.

In July 2010 I started my placement for Airbus as a Government Affairs Assistant. It was my job to assist a small team in analysing government policy to deduce how it might affect our ability to do business. I was also required to engage with key political stakeholders, and write speeches for key political events. Some of my highlights included interviewing George Osborne, and being responsible for the formulation of select committee evidence. The perks with any placement are something that keeps you and your peers amused when you are finally reunited. For me, the fact I got to fly to work on occasion certainly did beat the average commute.

Since graduating in 2012 I have enrolled on a law conversion course to train to be a Solicitor.
