I studied Modern and Mediaeval Languages at Girton College, Cambridge, reading French and German, and pursuing interests in literature and linguistics. My doctoral research, in the area of literature and commitment, focused on the writing of French journalist, novelist and Communard, Jules Vallès. This interest in nineteenth century political journalism subsequently developed into a wider concern with French media, now the subject of my research and teaching. My research has examined the French print media, national and regional titles, and the street press. I have published on media coverage of elections; issues of regulations, diversity and balance; and representation of women in the media.
My first lecturing posts were at Coventry College of Education and the University of Warwick. I also worked for the Open University before coming to Aston University, where I have spent the majority of my career.
