Nadia Abiatico
I am a doctoral research candidate in Applied Linguistics. “Multimodality in Public Discourse: Combining Linguistic, Vocal and Visual Analyses” is the current research working title. I am currently developing a methodological framework for the multimodal analysis of my data, composed by a collection of Commencement Speeches, delivered in American Universities. My research areas of interest include Rhetoric, Narrative Analysis, Spoken Discourse Analysis, Visual and Semiotic analyses with a focus on the study of Public Speeches, Multimodality, Verbal and Non-Verbal Communication.

I aim to pursue the academic career so as to become both researcher and lecturer, for which I am now training.
I joined Aston in January 2015 and I have been responsible for the following tasks in LSS, along with my own doctoral research:

  • I gladly take on teaching opportunities. I am currently a teaching assistant: I am delivering the seminars complementing Dr Ria Perkins’ lectures of the first year undergraduate module Language in Society
  • I chaired the 5th LSS Interdisciplinary Postgraduate Conference (2016), bringing innovations so as to enhance inclusivity, participation and effectiveness
  • I chaired the Inspirational Research Group (2016), a supportive group for research students where they could discuss and share their research issues, finding a way of helping each other and enhancing confidence in an informal setting through a series of motivating and useful activities
  • I was a member of the organising committee for the 4th LSS Interdisciplinary Postgraduate Conference (2015)

As part of my research expertise, I am always willing to help people preparing, designing and delivering oral presentations (or academic poster presentations), suggesting strategies in case of stage fright and graphical issues.
