Harnessing Diversity in Workplaces - post event analysis

Aston Centre for Interdisciplinary Research in Language and Diversity (InterLanD) hosted a half-day workshop – “harnessing diversity in workspaces” on 19th November 2009. The event was the first major academic event held at this newly established centre and it attracted participants from UK, Germany, and Belgium.

Prof Veronica Wong started the workshop by the introducing the origin of InterLanD and its current research activities. Prof Felix Brodbeck, Prof Erika Spiess and Prof Helen Higson then presented their research work related to some critical issues of managing diversity and intercultural communication. Dr Yves Guilaume and Dr Kai Liu delivered two short presentations on the current research activities at Aston, the current trends and opportunities of funding and grant application from UK funding organisations. The delegates then formed into two groups to discuss how to link their research interests to develop some joint research projects. Dr Regina Eckert chaired final discussion session to reflect what have been achieved from the group discussion and also highlighted some interesting insights and opportunities emerged from the event.

The feedback from participants was very favourable - many of them regarded the event as an excellent chance to explore diversity issues from a truly multidisciplinary perspective given the participants’ diverse disciplinary backgrounds. A number of research students also found the event particularly useful as they can share and learn from more established scholars in the field.

All participants said the discussions they had will lead to promising research collaborations in the future.
