A key aim of ACE is to make our undergraduate and postgraduate students part of our research community. Activities in this sphere include a series of student-oriented lectures, an ACE Students’ Forum, MA Master classes, and a student Politics Society. There have been over 20 events of this kind, two examples being a visit by Caroline Flint MP, then Minister for Europe, for a Q&A session with Politics and IR students (2009); and an annual, week-long ACE postgraduate study trip to Brussels.
Beyond the University, the Aston New EU Agenda Series of seminars and debates, run every year since 2009 with funding from the European Commission Representation in the UK, stimulates debate on issues of EU politics and public policy within the wider stakeholder community in the West Midlands. Through these, we have enhanced relations within the business community, local MPs and MEPs (e.g. public debate with Midlands MEPs during Euro elections), local councils and development agencies, voluntary sector groups and the local and regional press.
