Good afternoon Aston University, Good afternoon Dr. Muna. This is Wei from China, how are you today? I have got a question, is it necessary for me to have a lot of teaching experience prior joining please? Look forward to your response. Thanks.

Muna Morris-Adams:
Hello Wei - many thanks for getting in touch. You do not need any teaching experience at all for joining the course, but you will gain some practical teaching experience while on the programme. Have you already done some teaching ?

Thank you for your answer Muna. I have got a few months internship experience as English teaching assistant at a Primary School in China, and I am still studying my degree in Primary Education, where I am going to have a few months working for a private tutoring school in preparation for primary school student , who is preparing to study oversea. Would this be helpful?
Thursday June 21, 2018 11:25 Wei D.

Muna Morris-Adams:
That sounds like really useful experience to have under your belt, and any classroom experience will be useful for linking to the more theoretical aspects you'll learn on the course. Have you found that you enjoy teaching young children ?

[Comment From Wei D.Wei D.: ]
I particularly enjoy teaching Primary school students, as they will be able to show their interest, react to questions and instructions, whilst secondary school students seem to have a framework and working towards exam results more than interest. I would love to open and provide opportunity to primary school children, and hopefully inspire them about English as a language, rather than a subject.
Thursday June 21, 2018 11:31 Wei D.

Muna Morris-Adams:
I'm sure that if you enjoy teaching, the students -of whatever age - will pick up on that, and it's likely to motivate them to learn. Have you had experience of teaching secondary school students as well ?

I would like to ask two questions the first is about the course is there any libe practice of teaching within the coursef
Thursday June 21, 2018 11:41 Hi Afternoon My name is Gamar I

Muna Morris-Adams:
Hello Gamar - thanks for getting touch. Yes,teaching practice is a very important part of the course. You will plan and prepare lessons and teach them to your peers and other international students, and our MA participants always feel that they learn so much from doing this and from the feedback they get. Do you have any teaching experience already ?

[Comment From Wei D.Wei D.: ]
Within our course, we visited secondary school and speak to school teachers, by observing their teaching method, focusing in exam grades rather than inspiring students, means that most secondary school students are not engaging in class. Maybe the pressure from parents also make secondary school students see this as a subject, rather than a language. This makes me want to focus on primary school students, and those would like to study oversea, where they see English as a language as a skill, than just a subject to achieve marks.
Thursday June 21, 2018 11:49 Wei D.

Muna Morris-Adams:
Yes, I recognize the situation you describe here, where both teachers and students are under pressure to meet targets for exams. I understand that this can adversely affect teaching methods, but also think that there may be some scope for introducing more interactive, student-centred learning which could be more motivating. But I can see why you would prefer younger and more enthusiastic learners.

Why is it that some universities are including the CELTA course in their TESOL programme ?
Thursday June 21, 2018 11:57 Thomas Dieudonne Ngoue

Muna Morris-Adams:
Hi Thomas. Thanks for getting in touch and for your interesting question. I can't really speculate on why some universities may want to include the CELTA as part of an MA; it does lay some basic foundations for a career in teaching, but generally both the practice and theory of teaching and learning are explored in much more depth on MA courses.
