Aston University Library is a controlled access building.  Aston University staff and students can gain access via uniCARD whereas visitors will need to request access as per details below.  Authorised visitors can:

  • Use the Library for study purposes from 09:00 - 21:00 weekdays.  This applies even when the Library is open longer than those hours.
  • Use eduroam on own device if a member of another university or obtain a Wi-Fi password for own laptop from the Help desk (weekdays 09:00 - 18:00 term-time and until 17:00 during vacations). This will provide access to many electronic resources.
  • Use the photocopiers to scan to email (within copyright restrictions).  Photocopying, computers and laptops are not available to visitors.
Visitors are subject to the library regulations and must present ID and sign in and out on each visit.

The following people can apply for a visitor card to use the Library on a regular basis:

  • Aston graduates

  • Retired Aston University staff

  • SCONUL Access members (except Band R, i.e. full-time undergraduate students cannot apply for a visitor card)

  • Aston Engineering Academy staff

  • Aston Science Park staff

  • Podiatry students at Birmingham Metropolitan College

Registered visitors can:
  • Use the Library for study purposes from 09:00 - 21:00 weekdays and from opening up until 18:00 on Saturdays and Sundays according to opening hours. (Until 17:00 during the summer vacation weekends.)  This applies even when the Library is open longer than the hours specified.
  • Borrow up to 6 books at any one time (these must be returned on time or renewed, to avoid fines)

How to apply

  • Check that you have a passport style digital photo ready to upload
  • SCONUL Access applicants only:  register with the SCONUL Access scheme and save your SCONUL Access approval email.  (You will need to upload it when you register online with Aston University Library.)

Applicants will be sent an email when their visitor card is ready (this is normally within a working week). Name and address ID along with photo ID will be required on collection.

SCONUL Access Summer Vacation Scheme

Under the arrangements of the SCONUL Access scheme, students and staff who attend member institutions, can use Aston University Library for study purposes, during the summer vacation. Students and staff will need to show their university photo ID card with a current date (i.e not expired) to the Library Reception desk staff, each time they visit. Please check that your university is a member of the scheme before you visit.

  • SCONUL Access Scheme for staff and students from other universities

  • Under the arrangements of the SCONUL Access scheme, students and staff who attend member institutions can also apply for a membership card to use the Library on a regular basis if they are:
  • Academic and support staff (band A)
  • Research e.g. Phd (band A)
  • Part time (band B)
  • Distance learning (band B)
  • Placement (band B)
  • Full time postgraduate (band C)

Members of the public over the age of 18 can request a Day Pass at the Library Reception desk.

Day Passes are available 09-00-17:00 Monday - Friday and can be used by the named person, up until 21:00 on the date issued.   Two forms of identification are required:

  1. Name and home address (e.g. recent utility bill)
  2. Photo ID (e.g. driving licence) with proof of age 

Please note: A day pass cannot be issued without both photographic ID and home address details.  Please provide official translations of foreign documents, where necessary. 

Day passes are limited to a maximum of 3 per person, per academic year.
