Borrowing books, journals, DVDs, software

You will need to have your uniCARD with you whenever you want to borrow books or other library resources. You need to get everything issued to you before you leave the Library. You can either use the self-service machines, providing you have no fines or other restrictions on your Library record or you can have books issued at the Help desk.

Finding books on the shelf

The majority of books and journals in the library can be borrowed. Books are divided into three categories: long loan, 7 day loan and 1 day loan.

  • You must return all 1 day loans by 1:00pm the next day, except for items borrowed on Fridays which are due for return by 1:00pm the following Monday.  All other books are due back any time before the end of the due date, up until mid-night.
  • If another Library user reserves a book that you have borrowed, then we may recall it by sending you an email notice. You must return the item by the date specified on the recall notice.   (7 day or long loan items are due back before mid-night on the due date, or the date specified on the recall notice.)
  • Special arrangements are made for part-time, distance learners and those with disabilities and other additional needs.

Remember that fines are charged for the late return of reserved books.  Please return reserved books promptly.

Please note that during the Christmas and Easter vacation periods, normal loan periods apply.  This means that you will need to renew books that are due back during the vacation period.  If you are not able to renew books because they have been reserved by another library user, then you will need to return them by post.  No books will be due back during Library closed days, but fines will be incurred for late return. We do not recommend:

  • leaving Library books locked away in residences or your accommodation

  • taking Library books abroad

Summer Vacation Loans

Over the summer vacation, 7 day and long loan books are issued until October.  However, please check your Aston email address frequently in case a book which you have borrowed, gets recalled.  This can happen if the book you have borrowed has been reserved by another Library user. You will need to return recalled books to the Library by the due date included in the recall email notification, either in person or by post.  Please note: one day loan books will still be issued for one day only and projects for 7 days only as normal, during the summer vacation.

Lost items – the full replacement charge of the current edition from a Library supplier will be charged, plus £20 administration fee, in addition to any outstanding  fines.

Postal Loans

Part-time and placement students living in the UK may have items posted to them. Please contact your Information Specialist for further information on this service or email library@aston.ac.uk.
