Inter-library Loans and Document Supply

Aston University subscribes to a large range of resources, and most users will be able to find what they need within our existing collections, by using Library SmartSearch or by referring to the subject LibGuides.

Books and journal articles we do not hold in stock can be ordered for you from other libraries, via our online Inter-library Loans system which can be accessed here. Please check the item is not in our collections before submitting the request.

There may be a charge for this service.

The full cost charged to Library Services by the supplying library will be passed on to the user if the item is uncollected, or the article is not downloaded to a maximum of £20 per item.

Please log in to the online Inter-library Loans system here using your usual Aston username and password. The first time you log in you will be prompted to select your user type (i.e. staff, PG, etc) and department, and add your email address. Select the New Request tab and enter your request details. Once your request has been submitted you will be able to track its progress via the system.

Please note that problems have been reported using Chrome or Safari, you may need to use IE or Firefox instead

You should also register with the BL's On Demand service, so that you have a username and password ready to log into your document with when it arrives, however you should still apply via the Inter-library Loans system so that charges are sent to the Library and not to you.

Unfortunately it is not possible to guarantee delivery, or to say precisely when an item will be supplied.

Library Services are charged for this service and reserve the right to pass the charges on to the user, if specified limits are exceeded, or in the case of a renewal - please see the table below. If a charge is payable, you will be contacted, and have the option to withdraw your request at that point. Charges must be paid online and a receipt emailed to Library Services to progress the request.

The full cost charged to Library Services by the supplying library will be passed on to the user if the item is uncollected, or the article is not downloaded to a maximum of £20 per item.

Journal articles/book chapters: Most will arrive in an electronic format, and an email will be sent to you containing a link to download the item. Please read the instructions carefully as there is only one opportunity to print the document, although you should have online access for 3 years on any device. Please aklso see the section below on Accessing documents.

Printed photocopies, if supplied, can be collected from the Library Help Desk

Books / whole journals / theses: a notification email will be sent to you when the item arrives - collection is from  the Library Help desk. Please note that some items are Reference Only and cannot be taken out of the Library building - these conditions are imposed by the lending library and we must adhere to them.

If you do experience any problems the first time you try to access a document via this system, or are just unsure what to do, the following points should help.

  • British Library requires you to log in to access your document. In order to do this you must be registered with On Demand.
  • Once you have registered, please ensure that you have received the registration email and clicked on the link within it to activate your account before attempting to open your document.
  • If you receive an error message when trying to download your article please try to download and view the test pdf by clicking on the icon from the encrypted download page. If you are unable to view the test PDF it may mean that you don’t have the correct version of Adobe reader.  The latest version can be downloaded from https://get.adobe.com/uk/reader/ or by clicking on the Get Adobe Reader icon from the encrypted download page

  • You should have Adobe Reader 10 or higher on your machine. If you are a staff member with Adobe Professional installed on your PC you may experience difficulties downloading the document, please contact Inter-library Loans staff for advice before clicking on the link
  • If you use Google Chrome you should disable the browser by typing chrome://plugins in the address bar then scroll down to Chrome PDF viewer and click on disable. Alternatively use Firefox/IE.

If you have already tried twice to download the pdf without success it will be locked for copyright reasons, so you should email us for a new link at interlibraryloans@aston.ac.uk. Please do this as soon as possible, as the link only remains on the BL's server for 30 days. After this time you would need to re-submit your request and possibly pay again.

Renewals: Please apply online if you wish to request an extension. If this is granted, the renewal fee for BLDSC supplied items is £4.65 but other libraries may have different charges. Not all items are renewable.

If an item is returned late you may be charged Library Services overdue fines, plus a fine from the supplying library. This could be £4.65 (BLDSC automatic renewal fee) or more if the book is overdue and cannot be renewed.
