SCONUL Access

SCONUL Access

Aston University is a member of the SCONUL Access scheme.
This is a reciprocal scheme offering visitor access to the Library to:
Staff and researchers (band A)
Part-time, distance learning and placement
students (band B)
Taught postgraduates (band C)

If you are band A, B or C, you can also borrow books from other member libraries.

If you are band R then you will not be able to apply to use Aston University LIbrary through the SCONUL Access Scheme but can request up to 3 day passes per academic session. Day passes are available weekdays only between the hours of 09:00 - 17:00 (photo ID and proof of address ID will be required).

How do I join?

If you are from a member library, you will need to complete an application form online at: http://www.sconul.ac.uk/sconul-access. You will receive an email from your library confirming your eligibility and the band which applies to you, plus the finishing date.  Please print this message and bring it to Aston University Library, together with your University ID card, current proof of address and two passport sized photographs between the hours of 09:00 - 17:00 weekdays.
You will need to complete a registration form, either in advance or a form is available from the Library.  Your visitor card will be ready for you to collect within one week of submitting the registration form, between the hours of 09:00 - 17:00 weekdays. The card may be used for borrowing books and you will need to show your card to Reception staff to gain access to the building each time you visit.

Is there a charge?

No

When can I use the Library?

Providing you have your visitor card on you, you can use the Library from 09:00 - 21:00 Monday to Friday, up until 18:00 on Saturdays and up until 17:00 on Sundays.  This is the case even when the Library is open to Aston University staff and students for extended opening hours.

Can I borrow books?

If you are band A, B or C, you may borrow a total of 6 books at any one time. (You will not be able to borrow short loan books or journals.) Fines will be charged on overdue books.  If you are band R then you will not be able to apply to use Aston University through the SCONUL Access Scheme but can request up to 3 day passes per academic session.  Day passes are available weekdays only between the hours of 09:00 - 17:00 (photo ID and proof of address ID will be required).

Can I access electronic resources?

You can access many of our online resources (with some restrictions) if you bring in your own laptop and request a username and password from the Help desk.

How long does my membership last?

Membership lasts for the length of your placement, duration of your Library registration or 3 years, whichever is the shorter. This is renewable on application.
