Aston University is a member of the SCONUL Access scheme.
This scheme groups applicants into Band A, Band B, Band C, or Band R.

Aston University Library is pleased to welcome the following groups:

Staff and researchers (Band A)
Part-time, distance learning and placement
students (Band B)
Taught postgraduates (Band C)

If you are Band R then you are not eligible to use Aston University Library through the SCONUL Access Scheme.

How do I join?

If you are from a University that is a member of the scheme, please complete the application form online at: http://www.sconul.ac.uk/sconul-access. You will receive an email from your University library confirming your eligibility; the band which applies to you; and the date your membership will end.  Please print this message and bring it to Aston University Library, together with your home University ID card, current proof of address and two passport sized photographs between the hours of 09:00 - 17:00 Monday - Friday.

You will need to complete an Aston registration form, either in advance or at the Library.  Your visitor card will be ready for you to collect within one week of submitting the registration form, between the hours of 09:00 - 17:00 Monday - Friday. The card must be shown to Reception staff to gain access to the building each time you visit, and may also be used for borrowing books.

Is there a charge?

When can I use the Library?

Provided you have your visitor card with you, you can use the Library from 09:00 - 21:00 Monday to Friday; up until 18:00 on Saturdays; and up until 17:00 on Sundays.  This is the case even when the Library is open to Aston University staff and students for extended opening hours.

Can I borrow books?

If you are band A, B or C, you may borrow up to 6 books. You cannot borrow short loan books or journals. Fines are charged on overdue books if they are wanted by another reader. All fines must be paid before other books can be borrowed or renewed.

Can I access electronic resources?

If you bring in your own laptop you can request a wifi username and password when the Help desk is open.  You can then access many of our online resources (with some restrictions). You can also use Eduroam to access resources provided by your home institution.

Computers, laptops, video and DVD viewing equipment are not available to visitors.

How long
does my membership last?

Membership lasts for the length of your placement, duration of your Library registration at your home institution, or 3 years, whichever is the shorter. Membership is renewable on application if your circumstances are unchanged.

What if I am Band R? If you are Band R you are not eligible to use Aston University through the SCONUL Access Scheme. You can request up to 3 day passes per year.
Day passes are available weekdays only between the hours of 09:00 - 17:00 (photo ID and proof of address ID will be required).

Day passes are not available during the summer term exam and revision period.
