Finding and borrowing items


  • You are expected to search for and collect books from the shelves yourself.

  • To find out what books, journals, reports etc. the Library holds, use Library SmartSearch. You can search the Library SmartSearch online and don't have to be on campus.

  • On the Ground Floor of the Library there is a Help desk where you can get help.

  • To borrow a book you take it to one of the Self-Service Machines on the Ground Floor. Select Issue or Return from the display screen.  If there is a problem please go to the Help desk where Library Staff will be pleased to help you.

  • Books are borrowed for a fixed period called a ‘loan period’. You must bring books back by the due date shown on your receipt.

  • We send e-mails to your Aston e-mail account. Please check it regularly. This is where you will receive reminders that your books are due to be returned, notices about reserved books etc.


  • Return books at a Self Service Machine, following the instructions on screen.

  • If you do not return your books on time you will be charged a fine.

  • If you are unable to return your books for any reason eg. illness, please contact us.

Renewing books

  • If no one else wants the book you can keep it longer by ‘renewing it’. Log into ‘My Library Record’ using your university username and password. 

Reserving Books

  • If the book you want is out on loan you can reserve it online. When it is available you will receive an email telling you how to collect it.


  • If you have borrowed a long loan book and someone else wants it, you will be given a new due date. It is important that you return the book by the new date.
