Adelina Beyla, BSc Optometry, third year student
I find Optometry a highly social and rewarding career choice where I can constantly interact with people and help them maintain their most valued sense of all, vision.
I am a student from overseas, so before deciding on which university to attend I conducted extensive research about the BSc Optometry course and its reputation in every university in UK that offered it. Aston University stood up from the list as very reputable in the field, most student oriented and well organized with almost 100% of graduate satisfaction. After networking with some students that were enrolled in the Aston program at the time and having all my questions answered by the Admission Office I had little doubt but to put Aston as my first choice.
Optometry is a narrow and well-concentrated field with limitless opportunities to grow either by specialising to manage patients with most prevalent eye conditions such as glaucoma or macular degeneration or to take a route into continuously expanding world of contact lenses.
Besides excellent academic experience on the programme, I found the Student Guild to be very proactive in recruiting students to be involved in the activities on and off campus. Throughout my time on the course I have attended multiple Societies and Clubs that are very well organized and managed. They provide great opportunities for students to socialize and share their interests in sports, religion or any other activity.
My plans for the future are to successfully go through the placement year as a Pre-Registration Optometrist. During my Pre-Registration year, I am planning to do the distance learning MOptom degree with Aston University to improve my knowledge and qualifications. After all is complete, I wish to find a great work place and there is a high demand for Optometrist all around the UK, so I believe I will have a lot to choose from and make up my mind where I wish to settle down.
