Aims of this module

The module aims to teach the biology underlying the pathophysiology of haematological disorders and the interpretation of clinical data. On completion of the module, the student is expected to be able to:

  • Understand the normal functioning of haematological systems
  • Understand the diagnosis, prognosis and treatment of haematological disorders
  • Understand the preparation and uses of blood products and the risks associated with their use

  • Prevalence, inheritance, diagnosis and treatment of haemoglobinopathies and thalassaemia syndromes

  • Clinical presentation, diagnosis, prognosis, classification and treatment strategies in acute and chronic leukaemias, lymphomas, myelodysplastic syndromes and aplastic anaemia
  • Principles of chemotherapy, radiotherapy and bone marrow transplantation
  • Normal and abnormal haemostasis (coagulation, fibrinolysis and platelet function)
  • Pathophysiology, laboratory investigation and treatment of haemorrhagic and thrombotic states
  • Preparation and storage of blood products, compatability testing, uses of transfusion products, risks and adverse reactions
