If you require additional ICT facilities for your school or department, ISA can help you purchase the appropriate equipment to suit your needs and budget. ISA will research and provide you with a list of the most suitable products from approved suppliers. You can then choose your preferred option from this list and order the product. Once the equipment is delivered to ISA, a member of ISA staff will install it for you.
To improve the efficiency of the purchasing process ISA have provided a list of recommended equipment.
How to purchase ICT equipment
- Email your school’s ISA desktop support team detailing your requirements.
- ISA will then research appropriate products and obtain quotes.
- If there is more than one suitable option, a selection of products from approved suppliers will be presented to you from which you can choose your preferred option.
- Once you have chosen the product(s) you wish to purchase, place the order directly with the supplier using the University’s standard purchasing procedure. Please note that the delivery address should be ISA and not your school or individual office and the delivery should be marked for your attention so that once received in ISA we can identify who it belongs to.
- Inform your school’s ISA desktop support team that you have placed the order. Please include the Purchase Order number and approximate delivery date by the supplier.
- Once the delivery is received in ISA a member of staff will inform you of its arrival.
- A member of ISA staff will configure the equipment and contact you to arrange a suitable time for delivery.
- Be advised that the purchase of ICT Equipment may not be made via Petty Cash or by any other means. By purchasing outside of the approved method noted above, the University is left vulnerable to warranty and other related issues.
Guidelines for purchasing personal/internet tablet devices (e.g. iPad)
The University aims to provide each employee, whose job requires one, a suitable desktop or laptop computer. The goal is for these computers to be connected to the University network and be able to interchange Office documents without compatibility problems, hence the recent upgrade of computers that are not currently capable of running Office 2010.
Academic staff may have research or teaching requirements for other computers. Usually these are purchased through PASA accounts or research grant funding.
A growing number of requests for purchases of iPad (or other personal/internet tablets) are being received. At present these do not offer the full functionality of desktop or laptop computers (including some issues manipulating Office documents) and in most cases are not yet suitable as the main machine provided by the University.
With this in mind, the Executive have agreed that:
personal/internet tablets may be purchased using PASA and research grants.
personal/internet tablets may not be purchased using Departmental or School budgets as a replacement for the main work computer (or as a shared resource across a group or department) without the agreement of the Executive Dean or relevant Executive member. This restriction does not apply to the purchase of certain types of tablet PC devices which have the full functionality of personal computers (i.e. these are laptops with reversible touch screens).
personal/internet tablets may not be purchased using Departmental or School budgets as a second personal mobile computer. Users wishing to change from desktop to laptop to provide mobility should seek authorisation in the usual way.
The policy, “Purchasing ICT Equipment” (above), applies to procurement of personal/internet tablets as well. To avoid any delays the source of funding should be declared when asking for a quotation to buy a personal tablet through ISA.
Personal/Internet tablets are, in general, mobile communication devices and may incur high charges if taken abroad and advice is available from ISA to minimise charges.
These guidelines are obviously subject to change as technology moves on!
