I’m a Design Engineer happy to tackle the mechanical design of both products and machinery.  My passion is to ensure that the fundamentals of sound engineering practice together with creative design thinking methods are applied to research activities as well as being passed onto the new generation of engineers.

My insights are based upon my experience of working on products and machinery from first concept sketch and calculations all the way through to volume manufacture or on site fitting and final adjustments to achieve a fully commissioned robust result.  I have a background as an apprentice trained, university educated engineer with industrial experience of many different sectors and organisations’ ways of working, from the subtle leverage of Japanese methods and visual management techniques through to the creativity of SME’s and the rigours of unambiguous engineering drawing, communication, development and validation methods able to satisfy the most exacting of standards. I’m as comfortable with a blank piece of paper and pencil or PC and mouse as I am using my granddads ball pein hammer.

Throughout my career I’ve focused on well thought through design methods and techniques that can help delight each customer in turn throughout the lifecycle of the engineered product – piece part manufacturer, assembly build and test (from mistake proofed manual to fully automated) simple inspection, final usability, and ultimate recyclability – all the stakeholders.

I’ve found the most rewarding & interesting work to be where disciplines meet and welcome collaborative projects.

  • Indentured apprenticeship (1978-82) including City & Guilds / EITB Engineering workshop practice together with ONC/HNC Mechanical Engineering.
  • B.Sc (Hons) Engineering Science & Technology from Loughborough University 1985.
  • Pg Cert (Ed) 2006.

Worked across industrial sectors for the past 30 years from innovative SME’s (Small to Medium sized Enterprises) working on products varying from precision fibre optic cleavers through to lawn mower sharpening machinery. Blue chip OEM’s (Original Equipment Manufacturers) such as Plessey Telecommunications (mobile handsets), Honda (engine manufacturing machinery).  RTO’s (Research & Technology Organisations) such PERA (with the Fraunhofer Institute) and the-MTC (Manufacturing Technology Centre) with Rolls-Royce (development of manufacturing capability).

Customers have included: General Motors (Vauxhall), Nissan, Jaguar, Lucas, Land Rover, Honda, British Rail, Black & Decker, Rolls Royce.

Sectors include: computer peripherals, railway maintenance, telecommunications, automotive, aerospace and environmental.

I’m also Engineering Design Director of Praxis Product Design Ltd a design consultancy company.
