I have been involved with Admissions within the School of Engineering & Applied Science for over 18 years. Being an Admissions officer allows me to do one of the things that I most enjoy - interacting with people. I deal with international undergraduate admissions and all the postgraduate taught programmes admissions on a daily basis. I also get to contribute to university planning processes and participate in a number of university forums.
The most enjoyable part about my role is reading the applications – it’s like personally sitting down with someone and getting to know them. The hardest parts are reading so many applications in such a short period of time and making a distinction between so many qualified applicants. My role requires me to go through each application form carefully and come to an informed decision on whether we should accept that applicant and help them start on the pathway to their future career. It is very enjoyable to finally meet the students I have read about and corresponded so much with when they come to enrol with us. It is even more enjoyable to watch them develop as individuals during their time at Aston University and ultimately graduate with their degrees.
More recently, I was made Admissions team leader and I now head up a small team of dedicated and enthusiastic staff looking after admissions for the School of Engineering and Applied Science.
