Work package 1

To assess the scope for using wasteland and wastewater resources to cultivate energy crops in selected areas of the UK and India and to implement phytoremediation at 4 sites in India.

What is planned?

To carry out detailed studies at selected sites in the UK and India regarding the energy crop production and potentially competitive food production, including soil quality, topography and climate.

The selected geographical focus in both India and UK are as follows:
  • Severn-Trent catchment in the UK
  • Rajasthan, UP and Haryana in India.

How is this achieved?


Using FAO agricultural economic zones (AEZ) procedures developed for the determination of location-specific crop suitability based on these criteria, a Geographical Information Systems (GIS) will be applied. Since these procedures take no account of agro-economics, it will be incorporated alongside the traditional GIS multic-criteria model in order to identify land suitable for small-scale energy production in rural areas.

The AEZ approach will be modified to cover the use of wastewater for irrigation and consider pathways of heavy metals. Four phytoremediation/fertigation projects at selected sites in India where wastewater is available, data will be monitored and compared with the models developed.
