BRISK

EBRI was part of BRISK (Biofuels Research Infrastructure for Sharing Knowledge) - a €10.84m four year initiative (£8.98m funded under EC FP7) which finished at the end of September 2015. It was aimed at researchers interested in:
  • Thermal biomass conversion
  • Biofuels
  • Using the facilities of leading European laboratories

In total BRISK funded over 200 researchers (outside and inside the project) to carry out research at the partners' facilities.

The specific aim of BRISK was to overcome fragmentation in R&D facilities for thermochemical technologies, by enabling researchers to have access to high-level experimental facilities and services across Europe. The BRISK network encouraged and facilitated cooperative research in the specialised laboratories of project partners. The facilities were also open to researchers outside of the project.

BRISK Researcher case studies at EBRI:

  1. Eleni Liakakou, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece
  2. Elias Christoforou, Frederick University, Cyprus
  3. Giedrius Stravinskas, Lithuanian Energy Institute
  4. Giulia Lotti, University of Florence, Italy
  5. Gözde Duman, Department of Organic Chemistry, Ege University, Turkey
  6. Jens Peters, IMDEA Energy Institute, Spain
  7. Malwina Śnieg, University of Warmia and Mazury, Poland
  8. Marcin Sajdak, Institute for Chemical Processing of Coal, Poland
  9. Natalia Marin, IRENA, University of León, Spain
  10. Pelle Mellin, KTH Royal Institute of Technology, Sweden
  11. Simona Intini, University of Foggia, Italy

Production of sustainable biofuels through advanced thermochemical conversion units and biorefineries will enable a wider range of feedstocks to be utilised, making a significant contribution to EU targets for GHG reduction (20% by 2020 and 50% by 2050) and increased use of renewable energy sources in the transport sector. Enhanced energy security and integration with other industrial sectors, such as agriculture, also play a role.
