Prof Alison Hodge (EAS) was a member of the “Sterling Group” - a small group of senior academics from leading Engineering faculties in UK universities - which visited India for 10 days at the end of July. The aim of the group was to build links with high quality engineering teaching and research institutes in India.

The whole group met with academics and researchers at the Indian Institute of Technology in Roorkee – one of the leading and historic Indian engineering institutes – north of Delhi, then staff, students and researchers at Anna University in Chennai, another highly rated institution. Individuals from group also visited a wide range of private and state universities and colleges in the Chennai area, Alison’s being VIT University Vellore, a large and well regarded private technology university.

In addition, the Group was welcomed by the British Deputy High Commissioner and his British Council and UKTI colleagues, along with local representatives of Chennai business and industry.  (This was kindly extended to join other guests watching late at night, the start of the London Olympics ceremony, at the Deputy High Commissioners British-style private residence, in an Indian monsoon!) The visits provided a great insight into the Indian higher education system, issues of skills development for Indian companies and several major opportunities for collaboration with respected institutions
