World class companies in the 21st century need world class professional employees who are able to support their practice with theoretical understanding so that they can be innovative and push at the barriers of technical excellence safely and sustainably.
The best way to develop and continuously enhance these skills and abilities is not in an artificial classroom environment, but in the real life world of work, where the challenges are the greatest, and where the learning can be made directly relevant to individuals and employer needs.
Programmes are available at Foundation degree, Bachelors and Masters degree levels and are all delivered using the work-based learning approach. This approach is based on using a series of real work projects to systematically enhance the skills and practical application abilities of employees.
Aston University has strong links with business, industry and the public sector, and we have developed work-based learning programmes with organisations such as National Grid, SSE, E.ON UK, Royal Mail, and BP. These programmes can benefit all organisations and businesses from large multinationals to small local companies.
Foundation Degrees are degree level qualifications that universities and employers work together to design and deliver, enabling you to benefit from both academic and work based learning. Aston’s Foundation Degrees are varied, flexible and accessible. We offer the following Foundation Degrees.
The Degree Apprenticeship allows students to take up a full-time job and complete an Aston Honours degree while earning a professional wage throughout, with Government and partner employers covering all tuition fees.
Through using a 'blended learning approach', work-based experience and on-campus teaching days are used to build students' technical proficiency and practical ability.
Digital & Technology Solutions (BSc)
Our Bachelors level courses offers a progression route from Foundation Degrees (or equivalent) and will provide 120 credits. They aim to assist engineers to gain in-depth knowledge in their specific field in the workplace, and progress towards related professional institution’s membership.
Our MSc Professional Engineering programme provides the advanced engineering knowledge and understanding needed to qualify for full chartered engineer (CEng) status, and helps with building the range of practical competences also needed for CEng. All modules after the initial Professional Development Audit are highly flexible – they are designed to be tailored to suit each participant’s engineering area, particular interests and employment circumstances.
We recognise that you may not have the time to complete a full degree at the moment, but would rather undertake a short intensive period of study in a particular discipline. It may well be that you have completed a degree and wish to continue your professional development to help obtain or indeed retain your professional registration. The Aston Professional Education Centre offers a range of stand-alone modules that can be taken on either a taught or distance learning basis.
