Global citizenship

Global Citizenship is the foundation for everything we do at Aston

Inspired by Oxfam’s Curriculum for Global Citizenship, it is based on five principles:

  • developing the skills and values that enable people from a range of cultures and backgrounds to enjoy working together and to gain the benefits of diverse teams in driving innovation
  • understanding how the world works, economically, culturally and politically, and equipping ourselves to succeed within it
  • encouraging participation in the community on local, national and global levels
  • recognising the need for sustainability, in our work and our family lives, to minimise the impacts of climate change and other environmental pressures, whilst enabling ethical economic development to enhance quality of life
  • striving to create those changes that will have a beneficial impact on the quality of life for future generations, and encouraging others to do so.

Aston University aims to:

  • create an environment which encourages free speech, personal development and mutual respect
  • show respect, courtesy and professionalism to all
  • provide equality of treatment for all regardless of gender, age, race, disability, sexual orientation, religion or belief
  • enable students to develop their cultural intelligence through inter- cultural activities and language learning provision
  • provide a safe, secure, friendly and healthy environment.

We ask you to:

  • interact positively with staff and students from a broad range of cultural backgrounds
  • show respect, courtesy and professionalism towards all other members of Aston University and the wider community
  • take responsibility for promoting a safe, secure and healthy environment.
